Cranberry Harvest, Plymouth, Bourne, Wareham

Image
As Thanksgiving draws near, we thought we'd take you to Plymouth for a bit of cranberry harvesting. We were called Cranberry County Magazine for a while, and this guy was our logo for about 8 years. I probably owe him a share of the profits, which- sucks to be him- would be about $7.   These shots were from Plymouth, Carver, Bourne and Wareham. They are from prior articles. We stayed out of the bogs this year. We are not familiar with the Covid protocols for each individual farm, so we played it safe. Cranberry thresher machine thingy ... in action! That machine makes the berries float, and then the workers gather them up and a machine sucks them into a truck. We have all parts of that process in this article somewhere, although they are somewhat shambolic chronologically.  We got in real close for some shots, which they used to let you do before the Coronavirus came around. Wisconsin, a much larger state physically, produces more cranberries than Massachusetts does. However, they

The End Of Our Fall Foliage Season

November foliage! We are well past peak, but you can still see color if you hunt around a bit.  I'd say that 99% of our colors are gone, and leaf drop is major... but every picture here is from the last week, mostly Duxbury, Plymouth, Halifax, Hingham, Marion, Rochester, Fairhaven, Middleboro, Bourne, Wareham, Sandwich, Mashpee, Mattapoisett, and those sort of towns. One of these may be New Beige, which is not an easy score unless you work the edges of the town. I'd strongly recommend getting as South and as Coastal as you can. Again, most of the leaves are gone, and you'll really have to Want it, but you can still catch some if you hunt hard enough. I'm pretty sure this is Duxbury, and I took it last Saturday. I drove by it on Tuesday, and all the leaves had dropped. My sister's crabapple tree The guy in the lower left is the Google Image Search result you get if you type in "The look you get when a car suddenly veers off the road, parks in front of you, the

Earthquake Hits Off Massachusetts

Image
A 3.6 Richter scale earthquake (downgraded from the original 4.0 designation) just hit in Buzzards Bay. We mean the body of water, not the village. It lasted 3-5 seconds, and I have reports of people feeling it from Pembroke to Westport. No tsunami warning is in effect, I don't think it was that big,  It appears to be right off Westport/Dartmouth. 9 km SSW of Bliss Corner . Earthquakes happen a lot in New England, but they are generally very small, and it is rare to feel one. We don't live on any San Andreas Fault stuff. If a tsunami came, it would probably be smll enough that a well-built sandcastle could shake it off. No reports of damage. We'll be back with an update if needed.

Halloween Decorations

Happy Halloween! If you didn't get enough Halloween last night, we have a bit more for you! The middle decoration is human. This house is my Halloween MVP every year until someone steers me somewhere that has people making a greater effort. I live in Buzzards Bay, but I take the kid to Duxbury to trick or Treat, half because of the awesome decorations, half because people tend to give out full-size candy bars in wealthier neighborhoods, and a seemingly-impossible third half because it was what I was doing when I was a kid. We have a 13 year old photographer on the spectrum, and this is his offering. It was a cold night, with more than frost on the pumpkin. An MC Escher monster, consuming itself. I think this dude actually had a TV screen in the yard, I just didn't drive by the house at dark to see what it was. The guy on Long Pond Road in Plymouth never disappoints. Beetlejuice there is a Lawn Yeti for the rest of the year.  The House Of The Blue Light Red Skeleton and wife..
