Multi Tide Nor'easter To Smite Us This Week

Image
Snow, rain, winds, surf...  You thought 2020 was over. You were wrong. This is the 13th month of it. Ahh, just kidding, it won't be THAT bad, at least not in Southeastern Massachusetts. There is a strong possibility of a change to rain washing away some snow, especially on the Cape. The true sledding stuff will be much further inland. A big storm will form and pass by us. She will take her time doing so. We could see some precipitation Monday afternoon, and I wouldn't rule out some ocean effect snow on Wednesday.  Winds will howl out of the NE then N/NE then N as the storm moves along. They could gust into the 40 mph range, perhaps the  50s along the coast. While we are in between full and new moons, we have January-style 10 foot tides, and the surf will have plenty of time to wok itself up. Monday afternoon will see building seas, it should get hectic overnight, and Tuesday afternoon's tide could do some moderate coastal flooding. Wednesday could still have some energy,

South Coast Surf Check, 1/17/21

A steady SW wind brought some surf to the South Coast.   The best gust we saw was 38 mph. We started in Westport, at Gooseberry. According to our wave sites, it was our best bet to see surf. The sites were correct. We did catch some surfers (see below) We decided to head east, see how the surf faded as we moved up Buzzards Bay. We headed down Sconticut Neck in Fairhaven. We were seeking SW-facing beaches that stuck out into Buzzards Bay a bit. Fairhaven is two towns over from Westport, but the surf was noticeably weaker. Westport had 20-25mph winds with gusts near 40... Fairhaven had 10 mph winds, few higher gusts. We have no problem at all spamming this article into New Bedford FB groups based on this distant shot across the bay at some old factory. We kept moving east, our next stop was... Marion Marion was even more quiet than Fairhaven. This was Point Road, near something like the Kittanset golf course. Next stop, further east, Wareham. Little Harbor Beach had hardly any surf at al

Surf Check- South Shore, 1/16/21

No major storm or anything, but we still went out see the waves... We never lead off in Scituate, mostly due to her centralized location on the South Shore. That ends today. We were there about 45 minutes before high tide. Yes, that's our photographer cursing in our video above, and yes, he's with a kid. Even if the weather isn't that bad, Scituate always looks a bit stormy. "Scituate sounds like the degree you get if you study Science Fiction at a community college" ... some guy in one of those People From Out Of State Try To Pronounce Massachusetts Town Names videos. Hey! I think this is Hull! How did it sneak into the Scituate part? Oh, never mind, we're in the Hull part. The storm was moving south to north, we were chasing it, and we caught the tail end of it in Nantasket. Hull was wavier, rainier, mistier and just plain stormier than the other towns we visited. Lots o' people were out watching the waves. It wasn't that bad of a day once the rain
