Run To The Hills: The South Coast Sledding Guide

Pictures and video of our South Coast sledding rampage. That's South Coast, Massachusetts, player. If I had to go to war, I'd take one good sledder over 100 of those NASCAR folks driving circles in Alabama or wherever.

This is Potato Hill in Westport. If you want to see a 250 pound 52 year old guy on a child's toy, look out below...

Potato Hill is a popular spot with local sledders, but my kid had been pulled from school for a special sledding-related research project for a local media conglomerate, so we had the place to ourselves mostly.

Potato Hill is a pretty steep climb if you smoke a pack a day or have the Covid or something.

Next stop... the old Fairhaven Drive-In.

We had to park sort of sketchy, but locals probably have a better plan for this than I did.

Fairhaven has two hills, the closer one is less daunting, the farther one is steeper and has jumps.

Pierce Playground, or Pierce Beach if you get going really fast and can't stop. Pierce Beach is in Somerset.

Somerset is cool enough that they planted a few streetlights going up this hill, so the kids can sled at night. They are turning the lights off during Covid, but this is a good bet for lighting in non-plague years.

I love doing winter sports in a town with Summer in the name, even if they spell it with an O.

A quick stop in Onset, at Bay Pointe Golf Course. Golf courses can be touchy about kids trampling everything, but what are they gonna do, call the Army?

OK, bluff called. Just kidding, this is Fort Tabor/Fort Rodman in New Bedfrod.

This is a bit of a kiddy hill, which is a good thing if you have small kids. Our photographer seemed pretty happy with it.

One of the good things about War is that you want to build up earthworks to shield yourself from British naval artillery. Once you eliminate the Brits as a threat, you've got a sledding hill.

Not a bad slope for a kiddy hill, and a solid granite fort will stop your children before they sled into Buzzards Bay. Stop them cold, you might say...

Next stop... Kennedy Park in Fall River.

Much like how I didn't see one potato on Potato Hill, I didn't see any Kennedys at Kennedy Park.

The broken sleds of children are an immediate go-to spot for any ruthless sledder. Their frozen tears are my speed boost.

Dartmouth Middle School (above) and some hill in Taunton doesn't scare our reporters (below)

Added bonus.... Bourne Middle School.

You could maybe argue Buzzards Bay (village) as South Coast, but we had to cross the bridge to get to this hill.

Head for the hills!
