Hurricane Lee from Duxbury and Marshfield

Hurricane Lee stayed east enough of us that no major damage went down. We have a few pictures to share with you.

Tropical Storm Warning for SE Mass, Coastal Trouble Likely

Image
The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning  for Southeastern Massachusetts as Hurricane Lee approaches. This means that tropical storm force winds are possible within 48 hours. This could be upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning as the storm gets closer. Please note that nothing is set in stone, and forecasts can change rapidly day to day and even hour to hour. Any forecast models we show will be from close to when we publish this article. The author is not a meteorologist. Hurricane Lee, presently far east of Florida, is making a northern turn and should pass close to Cape Cod over the weekend. Nothing I see anywhere is calling for a direct hit on Massachusetts, with the eye presently being forecast to hit Nova Scotia or possibly downeast Maine.  The storm will pass close to us no matter what, which is justicification enough to fire up the Hype Machine and trot out Kelly Anne. Even if Lee misses us, it will have an impact, at least on the coast. Lee may b...

Worst Hurricanes In Massachusetts History

Image
It has been a hurricane-free summer, although we have just entered the peak of the season. We could still get done up, several times, even. There's a Halloween Gale on this list, for instance. With that in mind, we shall now take a look at the worst hurricanes to strike Massachusetts. We have a profound East Coast bias, in that there are several storms not on this list which did immense damage to Western Massachusetts. You read about a lot of destroyed apple harvests when you research articles like this. New England is distinct from the South in that they get more powerful storms, to the extent that some hurricanres up here would get muscled aside by blizzards and nor'easters if we turned this into a Top 20 list. Also, direct hits on Massachusetts are few and far between. Your typical hurricane that approaches New England curves offshore before getting to New England. When they do get close, our colder water weakens them.  Florida and Louisiana laugh at this article, over bo...

Marsh Madness: The South Shore Coastal Flooding Rankings

Image
Our goal today is to rank South Shore beaches by their vulnerability to coastal storms. Keep in mind that most of the storms we get around here are nor'easters. If we worked hurrciane damage into this list, it would significantly alter the ratings, putting places like Cape Cod and New Bedford into the top of the mix while kicking Marshfield and Scituate way down the list. We are going to mix the rubric in with the rankings, rather than explain it here. We'd be here all day, trust me. We're not claiming the state title. The North Shore has her own problems. We're just leaving that for some North Shore writer to figure out. Cape Cod also is in a class by herself, in that they get far worse hurricane damage than the South Shore gets nor'easter damage. They also get larger waves from storms than the South Shore gets. Their problem is that hurricanes don't happen that often here in Massachusetts. We are using town-by-town rankings. Ideally, we would rank this categ...
