Tropical Storm Warning For Massachusetts



Tropical Storm Isaias is coming to town, but our part of the state is only going to get a glancing blow. We do have a Tropical Storm Warning in effect from the National Weather Service. 

We are going to be on the east side of the storm as it passes, and our chief threat from this is wind. Winds could gust up to 50 mph or so. Coastal flooding looks to be minor, although if it happens, it will probably be on the South Coast. The time to watch is tonight's high tide, about 9:30 PM in places like Westport and Little Compton. The moon was full on Monday night.



We could get some downpours, but we aren't expected to pick up a lot of rain from this. There is a tornado threat, as is often the case with tropical systems.

The winds should gain strength this afternoon, and the rain should come around dark. It peaks for us overnight, and should be mostly spent for us by Wednesday morning.

We'll have some people out checking the surf, and we'll either post from wherever we are or go Live on Facebook... maybe both!

If I had to go to war, I'd take one good sledder over 100 of those NASCAR folks driving circles in Alabama or wherever. This is Potato Hill in Westport. If you want to see a 250 pound 52 year old guy on a child's toy, look out below... Potato Hill is a popular spot with local sledders, but my kid had been pulled from school for a special sledding-related research project for a local media conglomerate, so we had the place to ourselves mostly. Potato Hill is a pretty steep climb if you smoke a pack a day or have the Covid or something. Next stop... the old Fairhaven Drive-In.  We had to park sort of sketchy, but locals probably have a better plan for this than I did.  Fairhaven has two hills, the closer one is less daunting, the farther one is steeper and has jumps. Buzzards Bay Coastal Flooding

  Urban planning is better with a sense of humor...  This is Buttermilk Bay flooding Hideaway Village in Buzzards Bay. That's Buzzards Bay, village, not Buzzards Bay, body of water. Water can't flood water, I think. Buttermilk Bay flooding out Buzzards Bay is one of those Massachusetts things like "You're driving on Rte 1, Rte 93, Rte 3 and the Southeast Expressway, and it's the same road" or "Rte 6 and Rte 28 are the same road, until they're not" that confuse non-locals. Hideaway Village, which has Cohasset Narrows between it and Buzzards Bay (body of water), doesn't get really large waves. River runoff (Red Brook empties into Buttermilk Bay), storm surge and a strong South wind can shove the water inland somewhat. A series of storms has had this effect on the area all week, and I'm guessing that no one has a basement in Hideaway Village, It would take a bad hurricane to flatten houses in this area, but that hurricane would flatten a lot

Edaville Railroad Festival Of Lights 2023

  A gang of us went to Edaville Railroad in Carver this year.  Edaville Railroad is named for the original owner, Edward D. Atwood. There is no official Edaville section of South Carver. The park was first opened in 1947. It was originally a working railroad, used to harvest cranberries (Carver's motto? "Cranberries? Just happen to have some right here") on the bog that is now the park.  A quick pause in the history lesson so one of our journalists can pose with Santa. They used to let neighbors ride for free, but demand increased, so he began charging a nickel a ride. The trains were purchased from various failing railroads, as far away as Santa Fe. The original tracks were laid on top of the levees surrounding the cranberry bogs. Atwood perished in an explosion, and the park (the train rides became popular enough that the cranberry farm gradually became a theme park) was bought by a Rhode Island seafood magnate/railroad enthusiast.
